FAQ

What are hexatonic scales?

  • By definition, a hexatonic scale is 6 notes in an octave. There are different ways to interpret a hexatonic scale (whole tone, blues scale etc), but you can choose the notes to make up the six notes. I've found my own 6-note hexatonic scale system for improvisation by using 3 notes per string, which helps me visualize more of the notes on the fretboard. If you’ve heard any of my solos, then you’ve heard my hexatonic scale system.

What is included with my purchase?

  • Upon purchasing this video lesson, you will receive a single ZIP file containing detailed download instructions on how to access the HD Video Lesson, the PDF (in Bass Clef Standard Notation & TAB), and the Guitar Pro files for playback of the examples and transcriptions. (Guitar Pro software sold separately)

  • We recommend viewing all PDFs using Adobe Acrobat

*Where do I get Guitar Pro?

  • Download a free 7-day trial from guitar-pro.com

Are any other languages available?

  • Yes! We’re proud to say that the video lesson is available with subtitles in Spanish (Spain), Portuguese (Brazil), or Japanese. They are included after you access the folder following the download instructions.

Do I have to have a 5 string bass to play the exercises?

  • Nope! Although I play a 5-string bass, I play the exercises (and ‘most’ of my improvisation) in 4 string standard range to make it as universal as possible.

What will I learn from this video lesson?

In this video lesson you will learn:

  • Evan’s 3-note per string hexatonic system for improvisation

  • What Major & Minor Hexatonic scales are and how they are used.

  • How to apply these hexatonic scales over Jazz Standards and what they sound like.

  • How to use ‘hexatonic chord substitutions’ for improvisation

  • All this with detailed exercises in bass clef standard notation and tab. (PDF and Guitar Pro files included*)

How do I access the materials?

  • The folder for accessing the video lesson is password protected. You’ll find the password in the download instructions.

How difficult is the material?

  • The video lesson is best suited for intermediate to advanced skill levels & knowledge of jazz harmony would be recommended.
